ABOUT ABU DHABI
TODAY
The seat of the Federal Government and occupying
around 80% of the total area of the UAE, Abu Dhabi is the largest
contributor to the Federal Budget. As one of the world's most modern capital cities, it
boasts of a beautiful Corniche, innumerable first class hotels, skyscrapers, beautiful
mosques and magnificent fountains. The most striking feature is the lush greenery that
presides everywhere and particularly the very impressive entrance to the City. The parks
and gardens watered round the clock reflect the turning of H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin
Sultan Al Nahyan's vision into reality.
Among the most dramatic examples of the Abu Dhabi
infrastructure are the new Abu Dhabi International Airport, Mina Zayed, Sheikh Zayed Sports
City and the Emirates University at Al Ain, and a superb road system with impressive highways and under
passes. The elegant Corniche has made Abu Dhabi unrecognizable from
its earlier 1960's photographs. Ancient charm still prevails in the Emirates. The old Fort
or Diwan Amiri is restored to its original glory and is now a centre of academic research.
Open air "souqs" have much to offer fruits, oriental spices, richly coloured
fabrics and the prized Persian rugs, together with traditional and modern imaginative
designs in Jewellery.
